About the Council Tax discount for people with severe mental impairments
A discount may be awarded if a member of your household is severely mentally impaired. This is defined as having a severe impairment of intelligence and social functioning which appears to be permanent.
How much the discount is
You might be able to apply for a discount on your Council Tax bill if you or someone you live with is severely mentally impaired.
You’ll need to:
get a certificate to say you’re severely mentally impaired from a medical professional, such as your GP
If you can’t print the medical certificate, complete the application anyway. We’ll post a blank medical certificate to you for your doctor to complete.
When you apply you'll need to upload:
the completed medical certificate, signed and stamped by a registered medical practitioner, like your doctor
copies of letters from the relevant organisations confirming receipt of one of the benefits stated above
