Brighton & Hove Inclusion Support Service (BHISS) Language Support
Our team works with schools to help them provide language support for children with speech, language and communication including Developmental Language Disorder.
Examples of SLCN include difficulties with listening, understanding, and/or talking.
Our team:
- gives advice, support and training to parents and staff, including how to make changes in the school or home environment to improve communication
- gives advice about visual supports that can be used to improve language
- models and supports language groups
- can observe your child and then advise on specific strategies, at the SENCo’s request
- supports parents and carers with coffee mornings and workshops, both online and in schools
- can also offer individual support to families to enable the family to learn supportive strategies to support their child’s language development
- provides training and workshops for parents, carers, and staff such as Makaton, which is a language programme that uses signs and symbols to help people communicate
- works closely with other BHISS teams
