Get going in Brighton & Hove this summer with Change4Life
With the Summer in full swing Brighton & Hove City Council’s Sports Development team will be making sure that it’s one everyone will remember.
Summer is a great time for us all to get active, and those with kids will want to keep them busy over the school holidays too. And the good news is that there’s loads going on in Brighton & Hove to keep everyone active and entertained – from loads of free local events to discounted sports club sessions.
It can be all too easy to let the kids spend a bit too much time on the sofa over the summer, and whilst it’s great to relax after a long school year, it’s also important to make sure that they stay active during the holidays. The longer days are also the perfect time for adults to join in and give something new a try too.
Kids aged five to 16 need to do at least 60 minutes of physical activity that gets their heart beating faster than usual, and they need to do it every day to burn off calories and prevent them storing up excess fat in the body. And activity’s not just important for kids - it’s also recommended that adults should make sure they’re active for 150 minutes a week.
Cllr Sue Shanks, chair of the Children & Young People’s Committee, said:
“Summer is a perfect time to adopt a healthier lifestyle for the whole family. There is a wealth of free activities throughout the city from skating for older children, table tennis for all ages and Healthwalks including a 4 mile walk from Devil’s Dyke to Hove Lagoon.
“With the South Downs on our doorstep, why not take a spectacular walk in the countryside or make use of the Breeze up to the Downs buses from the city to Stanmer Park, Devils Dyke or Ditching Beacon.”
“So make the most of what’s going on in the area and make sure this summer is a happy and healthy one.”
