Plans to improve Preston Park cycle track approved

Funds to replace the fencing around Preston Park velodrome and carry out minor repairs were approved by the Economic Development & Culture Committee on Thursday September 17.

Councillors agreed to the £298,000 scheme which will mean that the track, once repaired, could be used for cycling competitions.

The project will be funded with a grant from British Cycling, match funded by the council. The council’s match funding will be provided from section 106 money from the redevelopment of the Co-op in London Road (£100,000).

John Mills, Coaching, Education and Development Director at British Cycling, said: “We welcome the decision by Brighton & Hove City Council to commit funding for the refurbishment of the Preston Park facility. This is a boost for all levels cycling in Brighton and the wider South East region as a whole. We look forward to working with the council to prepare a successful funding application and to deliver the refurbishment project.”

Cllr Warren Morgan, chair of the Economic Development and Culture committee said: “We welcome the investment from British Cycling for this popular and historic cycling facility.

“We have approved match funding for the cycle track improvements as a ‘one-off’ project and we'll also be working with the Friends of Preston Park to draw up a long term management plan to enhance the park for all its users.”
