Charities and market traders invited to apply for a discretionary grant
A range of organisations can apply for a small business discretionary grant, including charities, community interest companies and third sector organisations who undertake commercial work and market traders with fixed locations and costs in Brighton & Hove.
There is still time to apply for a grant as applications are open until midnight tomorrow, Friday 12 June.
The council is keen to award grants to a broad spectrum of businesses which reflect the city’s small business economy and currently charities and market traders are under-represented in the applications.
We would also like to hear more from small businesses employing more than 20 staff and businesses interested in the smaller grant amount of £2,500.
More than 400 businesses have applied for a discretionary grant since applications opened last Wednesday.
Independent panel
Brighton & Hove’s independent panel which is helping to assess applications will review 195 of these today and the first businesses are expected to be paid from tomorrow. Representatives from the Brighton & Hove Economic Partnership and Federation of Small Businesses are on the panel.
The majority of applicants are from events, the arts, culture & creative industries, businesses in shared workspaces and retail.
Fund amounts
Our discretionary fund is available for small businesses in the city affected by the pandemic who have not been able to access other Covid-19 related government grants.
There is a total fund of £3.7 million and three levels of grants:
- £25,000
- £10,000
- Any amounts under £10,000
Grants do not have to be paid back.
