Brighton & Hove supports the National Day of Reflection
Brighton & Hove City Council is supporting a national day to remember those who have died during the pandemic, and to show support for everyone who has been bereaved. The National Day of Reflection on Tuesday 23 March 2021 marks the first anniversary of the date that the first lockdown started.
The idea came from end of life charity Marie Curie, who estimate that over three million people have been bereaved since the pandemic began, with many unable to say goodbye to loved ones, grieve or be comforted properly by those around them.
Marie Curie warns that without the right support for people who have been bereaved, the devastation that the pandemic has caused will impact the lives of people for generations.
Councillor Phélim Mac Cafferty, Leader of the Council said: “Today we take the time to mourn and remember the 449 in our city who have died from Covid-19 and the 126,000 nationally. Behind each of these statistics is untold loss and sadness, but we are also angry that so many have had to die at all and we vow to continue to fight for those left in its wake.
“This has been a difficult year and like so many in our city we are clear that lessons must be learned by the government. The pain of knowing that many deaths were completely needless and preventable will not go away. We have suffered one of the highest death tolls of any country and our economy has been one of the worst affected.
“For all those affected by the pandemic, whether by bereavement, ill health, isolation, separation, or loss of employment, the key will be how we rebuild as a community and nationally ensure failings can never happen again.
“As we reflect on the sadness of the last year we also champion the incredible efforts of key workers in our city. Whether its food, transport, or health many have worked tirelessly to keep our city going.
“We thank everyone for everything they continue to do to follow the guidance and keep Covid-19 cases low – and as we reflect, it’s vital we keep up these efforts, to help prevent more deaths.”
