We cannot walk alone – Refugee Week 2021
Refugee Week 2021 runs from 14 to 20 June. It’s a festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary.
The theme of Refugee Week 2021, ‘We Cannot Walk Alone’, is an invitation to extend your hand to someone new.
Refugee Week with Brighton & Hove libraries
Brighton & Hove libraries are holding a series of events to mark this year’s celebration of Refugee Week.
Highlights include an online ‘Refugees are Welcome Here’ poetry, music, and fiction event from the Brighton & Hove community, running from 7pm to 8pm on Tuesday 15 June.
There’s also the ‘Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Claims of Asylum: A European Human Rights Challenge’ exhibition in the windows of Jubilee Library, from Friday 11 June to Thursday 24 June.
Plus an online children’s craft session, ‘Flash Fiction’ writing competition, a curated book collection and much more!
Library of Sanctuary
Jubilee Library is proud to be a 'Library of Sanctuary', a diverse community space where everyone can feel welcome and included and connect with others.
The ‘Libraries of Sanctuary’ initiative has been set up recognise good practice of libraries which welcome people seeking sanctuary and other new arrivals into their community and seek to foster a culture of welcome and inclusivity.
It’s overseen by City of Sanctuary UK, who support a nationwide network to build a culture of welcome for people seeking sanctuary and promote understanding, recognition and celebration of the ways in which people seeking sanctuary enrich society.

Libraries preparing to open more fully when Covid restrictions ease
Our libraries are planning to resume more services from 21 June, subject to Covid restrictions easing. Jubilee Library will close for the week beginning 14 June while we get it ready, but Hove Library will open for six days.

Coinciding with Refugee Week, Brighton & Hove libraries have become only the second library service in the country to be awarded ‘Library of Sanctuary’ status.
