We must all play our part to keep Brighton & Hove safe
Councillor Phélim Mac Cafferty, leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, explains how we all have a responsibility to keep Brighton & Hove safe now we’ve moved into phase three of the roadmap out of lockdown:
“The latest changes in lockdown restrictions will feel positive for many in our city, as many venues reopen. Yet it is also important to remember that many people may still feel uncomfortable about the prospect of socialising indoors.
"What’s more, despite restrictions changing, our efforts to drive down Covid-19 infections are still vital. We’ve seen numbers creep up again in the past week.
"So I’m clear that it’s still better to meet outside if you can. Fresh air is yet another way we can minimise the risk of Covid-19 transmission.
"Many local businesses have adapted to make outdoor spaces that are comfortable for everyone. If the weather does drive you indoors, it’s crucial to make sure fresh air is circulating. I’d also ask venues to keep doors and windows open, to keep everyone safe.
"I know our city will continue to pull together to stop Covid, and there is much we can still do. As well as getting vaccinated just as soon as it’s offered, taking a free test is another way all of us can identify new cases.
"You can easily collect these from many different places across the city including local libraries and pharmacies, or order them free online, in order to test yourself regularly, ideally twice a week. https://www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests
"One of the nastiest things about the virus is that as many as one in three people who get Covid don’t know it, because they don’t show symptoms, which means they can transmit it to others without knowing. So it’s also essential we continue to follow guidance around washing our hands, keeping a safe distance and wearing a mask.
"So while I know so many of us have looked forward to the opportunity to meet friends and family, I’m clear that the best way to continue to support our city, our loved ones, and keep businesses and schools open is to proceed with caution.”
