Free event - learn how to save money and protect the environment by keeping electrical items in use longer 

Anyone wondering what to do with old or broken electrical equipment can find out at our free drop-in event on Sat 29 October 11am – 3pm at the new Revaluit pay-what-you-can shop and Hub workspace in Castle Square, Brighton, BN1 1EE.

The event is funded by the EU Interreg BLUEPRINT project. 

Councillor Pete West said: “Most people have forgotten cables, old phones and other unused tech lying around – but even when broken, most devices can be refurbished and re-used.

"This doesn’t just save money – it is better for the environment, too. This event is a fantastic opportunity for people to learn how to deal effectively with their old tech.”  

8% of all e-waste goes in the bin

Items such as mobile phones, electric toothbrushes, toasters and cameras are often discarded incorrectly, and they make up a significant proportion of the 8% of all e-waste that is thrown in waste bins.

This is subsequently landfilled or incinerated, meaning the important raw materials they contain cannot be extracted and are lost. In Europe, up to 1.4 kg of e-waste per inhabitant ends up in the general waste bin every year. 

Small appliances are easily stored and forgotten about in drawers, cupboards, garages, basements and attics. In an average European household, up to 5 kg of e-devices per person is currently hoarded. 

At the event, people attending will be able to: 

  • Watch a live ‘disassembly’ and see what’s inside the devices we use. 

  • Discover how electrical items can be refurbished and reused locally. 

  • Find out what the options are for disposing of devices safely. 

  • Explore an ‘exploded view’ of devices like mobile phones and laptops. You won’t believe what’s inside! 

Talk to experts

Experts from The Restart Project will be on hand to talk about the ‘Right to Repair’ campaign, which aims to tackle the difficulties consumers face when attempting to repair electrical items.

Information on where you can take your electrical items for repair locally will also be available.  

Local not-for-profit Tech-Takeback will  be there to answer questions about the RevaluElectricals programme which provides a doorstep collection and refurbishment service for donated small electricals across Brighton & Hove. 

A representative from local partnership, Digital Brighton & Hove will talk to visitors about the work they do, how they can help people to get online and their aim to create a more digitally confident city.

The BLUEPRINT to a Circular Economy Project has a total budget of 5.6m euros, 3.8m of which were provided by the European Regional Development Fund via the Interreg France (Channel) England programme.
