Let’s brighten up in Brighton & Hove
Having wound the clocks back by an hour at the weekend, we’re going to be out and about this week to support vulnerable road users see and be seen during the darker months.
A team of road safety officers, along with partners from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Sustrans and Sussex Police will be asking motorists to consider vulnerable road users and explaining the difference visibility can make to the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.
We want to reduce the risk of death and serious injury on our roads.
Officers will be handing out some hi-vis rucksack covers, simple lights and information about the city’s cycle training courses as well as carrying out surveys.
They will be in (4:45pm – 6:30pm)
- Monday 31 October - St Peter's Church area
- Tuesday 1 November - Church Road, Hove near Grand Avenue
- Wednesday 2 November - Preston Park South
- Thursday 3 November - The Highway junction with Lewes Road
- Friday 4 November - Aquarium roundabout near Madeira Drive
Hierarchy of road users
This year saw several changes to the Highway Code, including three new rules about the new ‘hierarchy of road users’.
The hierarchy places those road users most at risk in the event of a collision at the top of the hierarchy.
The updated code clarifies that:
- when people are crossing or waiting to cross at a junction, other traffic should give way
- if people have started crossing and traffic wants to turn into the road, the people crossing have priority and the traffic should give way
- people driving, riding a motorcycle or cycling must give way to people on a zebra crossing and people walking and cycling on a parallel crossing
