Not far? Leave the car
We are launching a campaign to encourage more people to leave the car at home for short journeys around the city.
For the next few months, posters at bus stops and social media posts will be asking people to consider walking some of the routes they may otherwise have driven.
The message: Not far? Leave the car.
National figures show that more than 1 in 4 of all car journeys are under 2 miles in distance.
The aim of the campaign is to encourage people to consider the financial, physical and mental health, and environmental benefits of walking short journeys, or as part of a longer journey.
Improving your health
Walking is a great way of getting more physically active for people of all ages and fitness levels and doesn’t require any specialist equipment.
Regular walking is proven to reduce your risk of some chronic illnesses, including heart disease, stroke, asthma, type 2 diabetes, obesity and some types of cancer. It can also improve your mood and reduce your risk of depression.
Saving you money
One of the huge benefits to walking is that it’s free!
You could avoid additional parking and fuel costs by choosing to walk some of the shorter journeys that you currently do by car.
The average motorist spends over £1000 a year on fuel costs as well as other running costs such as tax, insurance and MOTs.
Through our ‘Move for Change’ challenge, you can also earn rewards for walking around the city.
Helping tackle climate change
Active and sustainable travel is an easy way in which you can support efforts to combat climate change.
By choosing to leave your car at home for a few short journeys a week, you cut your carbon emissions while also freeing up more space for those that need to drive, such as Blue Badge holders and local deliveries.
Reducing the number of cars that need to be on the road can also improve air quality.
A chance to unwind
Councillor Steve Davis, Co-Chair of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability committee said: “We live in a compact city where many journeys could be made on foot, whether it be getting to and from work, the school run or a short trip to see a friend or relative.
“Walking is a great way of getting around Brighton & Hove. It gives you a chance to unwind and take in your surroundings. It’s a cost-free way of getting some great exercise and I’d encourage everyone to really have a think about leaving the car at home if they’re able to.
“We’re in the middle of a climate emergency and cost of living crisis. Choosing to walk those short journeys instead of driving can benefit us all.”
