Storm Eunice – please take care
The red weather warning for high winds in Brighton & Hove has now passed, but yellow weather warnings for high winds remain in place over the weekend. This may lead to further disruption and some delays in the clear-up from Storm Eunice.
Storm damage
The wind reached its peak between 10am and 3pm on Friday with gusts up to 70 miles per hour, which caused disruption to services and travel.
Our arboricultural team were busy clearing 43 fallen or damaged trees in the city on Friday.
We've closed Hove Station footbridge due to storm damage. We're aiming to repair and reopen the bridge as soon as possible but we can't give a timescale as yet. We need Network Rail's clearance to survey the structure and they are dealing with a number of issues across their infrastructure.
All refuse and recycling collections and street cleaning services were suspended during the storm, with plans in place to catch up over and after the weekend. Put your bins out again and we will collect as soon as we can.
Our household waste recycling sites were also closed on Friday.
Royal Pavilion Gardens and Goldstone Villas public toilets were open, all other toilets have been closed.
A tree fall at Woodvale Cemetery means we had to close the gates to the Extra Mural cemetery. The main cemetery and the crematorium were accessible through the main entrance from Lewes Road.
The Royal Pavilion and museums were also closed on Friday.
Stay away from danger on the beach
Brighton & Hove’s beaches can be extremely dangerous in stormy weather with violent waves coming from different directions, coupled with freezing temperatures and high spring tides in the early afternoon on Friday.
There is also a risk of flying pebbles due to shingle being blown off the beach. We strongly advise everyone to stay away from the seafront on Friday.
Our seafront team patrol the 13km (8 miles) of our seafront and look out for the safety of the public but we urge people to keep well away from high waves and rough seas.
We have also taken the decision to close the Undercliff Walk between Brighton Marina and Rottingdean between 5pm Thursday 17 February and 9am Saturday 19 February.

Weekend weather
The unsettled weather is continuing over the weekend with further strong winds, rain and sleet expected through Saturday and Sunday. The changeable conditions are then expected to continue into next week.
