Heritage Treasure Saltdean Lido on track to reopen the restored main building in 2023

To mark the week of the National Lottery Heritage Fund’s #HeritageTreasures Day we are celebrating the protection and restoration of some of our local treasures taking place this year.

The iconic 1930s Saltdean Lido building is one such project. The much-loved and architecturally significant local landmark is currently being restored to bring it back into use following the reopening of the main pool in 2017.

Grants from the National Lottery Heritage Fund’s (£4.2m), Historic England (£215,000) and £2.5m from Brighton & Hove City Council - supported by years of additional fundraising by the local community - enabled the £7.5m building restoration project to go ahead.

Plans are for the once dilapidated Grade II* building to reopen with a café/restaurant, library, ballroom, and rooms available for general and community use.

The Lido Trust and Community Interest Company announced in their newsletter before Christmas that they remain on track to reopen the main building in the second half of 2023.

Cllr Martin Osborne, co-chair of Brighton & Hove City Council’s Tourism, Equalities, Communities and Culture Committee, said: “We are proud to have partnered with the volunteer-led Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company, the Heritage Fund and other bodies in the restoration of this iconic building and the creation of a much-needed community facility.

“A key part of our newly adopted City Plan Part 2 is protecting and enhancing our city’s unique historic treasures, so they can be enjoyed by all residents and visitors, now and for years to come.”
