Celebrating Age Without Limits Day
On Wednesday 20 March, we celebrated Age Without Limits Action Day, an opportunity for everyone to take action and change the way we think about ageing.
This year’s theme ‘See and be Seen’ was about challenging the often narrow, negative, and stereotypical way that older people and ageing is portrayed in our society.
Some amazing events took place across our city, including the launch of the Shared Histories Podcast at Jubilee Library and a celebration event at the i360.
Stars of the podcast include King Jerry, legendary Motown DJ, and the Granddaughter of a Titanic Ships Steward.
Councillor Bruno De Oliveira, chair of the Health and Wellbeing board, said: “We were delighted to support the celebration of older members of our society, and we want Brighton & Hove to be a great place for everyone to grow older.
“Local businesses and organisations can make a difference to customers by making a commitment to become more Age and Dementia Friendly. A friendly face, patience and understanding can have a significant impact on someone’s day.
“Our Age and Dementia Friendly Business Recognition Scheme is a toolkit to support businesses to take simple steps to become more inclusive and accessible.
“Did you know that older people are responsible for half of all household spending, yet businesses don’t always adequately serve this market in terms of products, services, or advertising?
“There are more than 39,000 people aged 65 and over living and shopping in our city and this will continue to grow. We want to make sure that our older residents have the confidence and support to try new experiences, shop, eat and exercise wherever they want without any stigma.”
Many of the simple steps are low or zero cost and will benefit your business, as well as improve the experience for all your customers.
If you would like to be involved in making Brighton & Hove more Age and Dementia Friendly, you can sign up through our Age and Dementia friendly business online registration form.
