Backing next steps on devolution for Sussex and Brighton
Following a meeting of the Cabinet, we've formally approved the next stage for devolution, providing consent to the creation of a Mayoral Combined County Authority for Sussex and Brighton.
Working with partners across Sussex, we're committed to maximising the benefits that devolution will bring by unlocking new powers and funding to drive growth, support jobs, improve access to affordable homes and strengthen public services.
Significant step forward
Council Leader Bella Sankey said: “The creation of a Mayoral Authority for Sussex marks a significant step forward in unlocking new funding and opportunities for our region.
“It will enable us to secure greater investment and deliver ambitious plans for job creation, affordable homes, and integrated public transport.
“Through a Mayoral Authority for Sussex and Brighton we can shape a stronger, more connected, and economically vibrant future for our city and region.”
Once all Upper Tier Authorities in Sussex have provided consent, the Government will begin the legislative process to create a new Mayoral Combined County Authority for Sussex and Brighton and paving the way for mayoral elections in May 2026.
