Decarbonising Fabrica’s historic building – see BHESCo’s film in our Net Zero hub
Fabrica art gallery in Brighton has a new low-carbon heating system, project-managed by Brighton & Hove Energy Services Co-operative (BHESCo).
We’ve included a film of the project in our Net Zero hub which brings together advice, funding and support for homeowners, renters, businesses and landlords to help everyone save energy, money and resources.
View the film and find out more about the project on our website (click on ‘older buildings’). Our Net Zero hub includes information about saving energy and money for your home or business.
More about the project
BHESCo partnered with the small charity that runs Fabrica gallery to secure funding and develop a whole-building decarbonisation programme for the Grade II-listed former chapel in Duke Street, Brighton, which dates back to 1817.
Energy upgrades included rooftop solar power, battery storage, an air source heat pump, underfloor heating, LED lighting and secondary glazing.
All works were covered by a successful grant funding application.
Making energy efficiency and low costs achievable
Councillor Tim Rowkins, Cabinet member for Net Zero, said: “This project demonstrates that it is possible to successfully decarbonise an historic building by connecting with the expertise of local community energy experts like BHESCo. From reducing heat loss and installing LED lighting to the installation of solar panels, heat pump and battery storage – all work together not only to help Fabrica lower their carbon footprint but also to reduce running costs.”

Our council plan
Working towards carbon net zero and showcasing local examples of how to decarbonise energy systems in buildings and transport is a key goal of our Council Plan to create an accessible, clean and sustainable city.
