Grab a free book to celebrate World Book Night!
Our libraries will be giving out free copies of ‘A New Year’ by Leila Aboulela to mark World Book Night, celebrated on Wednesday 23 April.
World Book Night brings together people from all backgrounds for one reason – to inspire others to read more and promote reading for pleasure.
Reading for pleasure is a globally recognised indicator in a wide range of social issues, from poverty to mental health, yet in England alone, 36% of people don’t read regularly.
Gifting books
As part of this year’s World Book Night, Brighton & Hove libraries have been awarded copies of the Quick Read title A New Year by Leila Aboulela to gift to partners and residents.
You can pick up a free copy from the World Book Night book displays at Jubilee and Hove libraries throughout April, while stocks last.
Librarians will also be gifting copies around Brighton & Hove on Wednesday 23 April, so keep your eyes peeled for them around Pavilion Gardens and the seafront.
A New Year follows the story of Suad, who, heartbroken after her husband's sudden death, moves to the countryside to live with her son's family, where she finds comfort in cooking and family time. As tensions rise, she must decide if she can embrace a new chapter of independence and make the most of her fresh start.
Quick reads
Throughout April you’ll also be able to find book displays at Jubilee and Hove libraries celebrating quick reads.
These are short books and great stories by bestselling authors, written in an accessible and easy-to-read style.
They’re a valuable tool for boosting reading skills, confidence and engagement in learning, and have led to thousands of adults reading, completing and enjoying a book for the first time.
Spreading the joy of reading for pleasure
Councillor Emma Daniel, Cabinet member for Children, Families, Youth Services and for Ending Violence against Women and Girls, said: “It’s very exciting that our libraries are able to participate in World Book Night and help spread the joy of reading for pleasure.
“Whether you read regularly or less often, it is the perfect opportunity to celebrate books and the difference they make to your life.
“We hope you will take the opportunity to visit Brighton & Hove libraries to get involved.”
