Have your say on plans for the King Alfred
We’ve pleased to share a further look at designs for a new leisure centre to replace the King Alfred and we want to hear your thoughts on what you want from the new facility.
We want to hear from everyone, whether you currently use the centre, are part of a sports club, live nearby or are interested in using the new facility in the future. Your feedback will help us understand what facilities are important to you and guide the decisions we make next.
Within the survey you’ll have an opportunity to see artist’s impressions of the building and share your views on the facilities proposed to be included.
People can find out more about the plans and share their views online in our survey until 31 October.
The project team are also available to answer any questions you might have about the project. Drop in and talk to them in the King Alfred Leisure Centre Ballroom on:
- Thursday 9 October (3pm to 8pm)
- Friday 10 October (1pm to 7pm)
- Saturday 11 October (8.30am to 12.30pm)
More information about the project and an opportunity to view the proposals will be on display in the foyer at the King Alfred Leisure Centre until the end of October.
Councillor Alan Robins, Cabinet member for Sports and Recreation, said: “We’ve already seen a fantastic response to the first look proposals and it’s clear that residents care very much about the King Alfred.
“The design team have developed a viable proposal for a modern leisure centre which makes best use of the site and can be delivered.
“To make sure it includes the facilities residents really want and need, now and in the future, we need to hear what is important to you.”
Richard Poulter, Willmott Dixon Managing Director Construction South Region said: “Our passion lies in delivering brilliant buildings, transforming lives, strengthening communities, and enhancing the environments within which we work.
“Key to us being able to deliver on this passion is our ability to listen and understand more about the communities we are working in, and for, to truly understand how the building we are delivering will serve the community long into the future.
“We are thrilled to be joining the wider King Alfred Leisure Centre team at the consultation exhibition to talk about the project, but also to meet some of the community who will use the leisure centre in the future.
“We encourage everyone to come along, share their views, and help shape this important community facility.”
Please share your views on the design proposals for the new King Alfred Leisure Centre and the regeneration of the surrounding area. The survey will take around 10 minutes to complete and is open until Friday 31 October.
More information
The King Alfred Leisure Centre is an important place for sport and leisure in Brighton & Hove, but the current building is at the end of its life and expensive to run and maintain.
The new facility will transform the current seafront site into a modern, accessible and sustainable leisure destination for all.
The plans being shared include a wide mix of facilities, including a much larger fitness suite, a leisure water area, a family entertainment zone and improved accessibility throughout. They have been developed following extensive community engagement to reflect the needs and aspirations of our residents.
The development of the remainder of the site for a residential led development will be a separate privately led project.
Last month, Willmott Dixon was announced as the preferred contractor, and the council’s Cabinet agreed the design team could move forward with putting together a planning application for the project.
