Join the celebrations as we mark 50 days to go until the start of Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025!
With just 50 days to go until the Women’s Rugby World Cup kicks off, we’re celebrating with a free event on Hove Lawns this Saturday, July 5, 1-3pm.
The Strive 25 event, which is supported by local rugby clubs, will offer a fun range of non-contact rugby activities for people of all ages and abilities.
There’s also a chance to meet special guests Saracens and England National player Jess Breach and Harlequins player Emma Swords, and to join the celebrations in the lead up to the tournament.
No registration is needed – just turn up and join in the fun!
Prestigious tournament
Council leader Bella Sankey said: “Since we were chosen as a host city for the Women’s Rugby World Cup, interest in the sport has soared, with many more women and girls joining our thriving rugby community.
“We hope Saturday’s event will encourage many others to have a go at non-contact rugby and share in the excitement as we count down to this prestigious tournament.”
Sessions in schools
One of the key aims of the Rugby World Cup Impact Programme is to tackle the challenge of keeping girls engaged in sport from a young age.
Nationally, 1 in 3 girls drops out of sport during their teenage years, often due to confidence issues, lack of local opportunities or feeling excluded from traditional sports environments.
“As a council, we are tackling this head-on, with inclusive, fun, supportive sessions in schools, parks and community centres across Brighton & Hove,” added Cllr Sankey.
“And the benefits go far beyond the pitch – physical activity is proven to improve mental health, boost confidence and create lasting social connections.”
Two World Cup matches
Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 will see two matches played at Brighton & Hove Albion Stadium – England vs Australia on September 6 and Ireland vs New Zealand on September 7.
There’ll also be an official fan zone in Victoria Gardens where fans and visitors can enjoy activities, entertainment and soak up the tournament atmosphere.
