New seafront lanterns going on public display
People across Brighton & Hove are being given a unique opportunity to see the next stage of our seafront lighting restoration project up close.
One of the new lanterns, which will be fitted to the restored and refurbished lampposts and brackets, has gone on public display at Jubilee Library.
It’s a chance for people to see the lanterns, made to respect the historical significance and design of the original manufacturer, before they’re erected high above the seafront promenade.
If you’d like to see the new lantern, it’s on display between Monday 6 October and Sunday 26 October just inside the main entrance of the Jubilee Library, Brighton.

The work so far
Last month, work took place to remove the first 5 columns from along the seafront. Two from Madeira Drive, two from Marine Parade and one on King’s Road, opposite the Grand Hotel.
The columns are being taken to Cast Iron Welding Services for repair and restoration with the new lanterns being made by lighting experts CU Phosco.
Once each is ready, the 5 columns will be placed back in their original positions.
More about the lanterns
Damaged by decades of exposure to the harsh conditions and salty air, the columns, brackets and lanterns are being restored or manufactured in a way that preserves their historic look and feel.
We have been working closely with Historic England who’ve approved our plan, which includes using original designs, paint colours, manufacturing techniques, and materials wherever possible.

Preserving the city’s heritage
Councillor Birgit Miller, Cabinet member for Culture, Heritage and Tourism, said: “This is a great chance for people to see the skill and expertise that goes into producing these bespoke lanterns up close. It was great to see it for myself.
“This is an exciting project which will help improve the look and feel of our fabulous seafront, while preserving its long heritage.
“The lighting is such an iconic feature of our seafront and deserves to be looking its best. I’d encourage everyone to come down and have a look at these amazing lanterns.”
