Our City Transport Plan 2035 – have your say on the future of travel in Brighton & Hove

We’re asking people across the city to help us shape the future of transport in Brighton & Hove for the next decade.

A consultation’s been launched on Our City Transport Plan 2035 – the council’s ambitious vision for getting around a cleaner, fairer and growing city over the next 10 years.

The plan covers everything from electric vehicles, active travel and public transport to our transport infrastructure, improving traffic flow and maintaining our roads and pavements.

We want people’s views on the challenges we all face, the vision and objects we have, and our plan for to deliver on them.

Planning for a new future

Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for Transport and City Infrastructure, said: “Our City Transport Plan is a vision of the future. The last decade has seen many changes with the growth in demand for electric vehicles, new active travel infrastructure and improvements to our bus network.

“The next 10 years has the potential to transform the way we move around the city so it’s vital we plan well and prepare for innovation, growth and demand. This includes measures to help improve air quality and reducing carbon emissions, tackling climate change and making the air we breathe cleaner.

“Travel and transport are integral to everything we want to achieve for the city. Linking our communities; helping our businesses and economy to flourish, creating a fairer, more equitable accessible, sustainable and inclusive city that’s easy to get about for all with well-run services we can rely on to get us there.”

The challenges we face and objectives we have

Our City Transport Plan 2035 sets out 5 key challenges that we will need to address.

• Enabling more people to live safer, healthier and more active lives
• Improving the flow of traffic on our roads
• Supporting the transition to low and zero emission vehicles
• Creating a transport network that is more inclusive
• Maintaining our roads and managing them as efficiently as possible

To help us meet these challenges, we have developed 6 core objectives

• Increase public transport use
• Enable the uptake and use of low and zero emission vehicles
• Deliver a safe, inclusive and integrated transport system
• Create well-maintained streets and pavements
• Provide active travel choices for all and excellent public spaces
• Promote and use technology to reduce and manage travel

Councillor Muten continued: “We know that residents, business and the millions of people who visit the city every year all have their own, unique experiences of moving through our city.

“Each perspective is important. This is why we want your views – what are the important objectives and challenges for you? What would you change, keep the same, improve and how would you like to see the space we have evolve to make travelling around the city better for you, your community and everyone?

The survey is open for feedback until Sunday 10 August. Please email transport.policy@brighton-hove.gov.uk if you need a paper copy of the survey or contact 07513 703194 and leave a message.

We’ll then analyse all the views and comments, make changes and bring the plan back to Cabinet members for approval.
