Valley Gardens 3 taking shape
Almost 6 months after work began to revamp and revitalise a key part of the city, phase 3 of Valley Gardens is really taking shape.
The project, which began with the resurfacing of Castle Square last November, has also:
- Removed the old traffic island in front of the Royal Albion Hotel, opening up space for wider pavements, cycle lanes and tree planting
- Installed new crossings at St James’s Street
- Laid new paving on the eastern side of the Old Steine
- Created more space for pedestrians walking near Princes Street

In the next few months work will move to the eastern side of Steine Gardens.
The project remains on course to be completed next summer.

Taking shape
Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for Parking, Transport and Public Realm, said: “It’s been great to see the progress of this transformational project over the past 6 months.
“The new crossings at the St James’s Street junction are a big improvement, while the new space at Princes Street makes the area much safer for pedestrians. We can also start to see just how much more public space will be created outside the Royal Albion.
“This is an exciting project and we’re making great strides. Valley Gardens 3 is going to make this part of the city look and feel so much better – a gem in our city and a real improvement our residents can be proud of.”

Once finished, Valley Gardens 3 will mark the completion of a project to improve and reinvigorate a key area in the heart of the city.

- Bigger and better space for pedestrians, with wider pavements and more direct crossings
- new trees, plants and green spaces
- a new public space around the Royal Pavilion and War Memorial
- space and infrastructure for events
- a safer junction near the Palace Pier
- priority traffic signals designed to manage and reduce queues
- an off-road cycle lane connecting the Level with the seafront
- new bus stops and shelters with the latest electronic bus time information
- improved lighting around Old Steine
