Western Road Red Route – have your say
Residents and businesses are being asked for their feedback on plans for a new Red Route in Western Road.
As part of our work to tackle anti-social parking, improve safety and access for businesses and to keep traffic in the city moving, a Red Route is proposed between Holland Road and Montpelier Road.
This involves changing the current parking restrictions from double yellow lines to double red lines.
We’re launching a six-week consultation on the plans, giving people the opportunity to have their say or suggest any changes they’d like to see made to the design.
The consultation closes on 4 January 2026

The Western Road scheme follows the success of the Red Routes on London Road and Lewes Road, which have helped to improve safety, reduce congestion and improve air quality since they were introduced last year.
The Red Routes have given us extra powers to enforce the parking restrictions using CCTV, allowing for more effective enforcement of the area.
They’ve also resulted in an 85.7% reduction in bus passenger injury incidents in those areas.
Feedback we received on the London and Lewes Road schemes resulted in five additional loading bays, having another extended and adding a motorcycle bay for food delivery bikes.

Listening to our residents and businesses
Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for Transport and City Infrastructure, said: “We see a lot of antisocial parking on Western Road which impacts on traffic, safety and bus journey times through this busy part of the city. A Red Route will mean we keep it safe and moving.
“We’ve seen the positive impact the Red Routes in London Road and Lewes Road are having; safer for bus passengers, pedestrians and cyclists while also making the road less congested for drivers and improves the look and feel of an area.”
“The consultation we had on the London and Lewes Road schemes led to a number of changes, including more loading bays, so it’s important people have their say and tell us how they think the scheme could be improved and best work for the whole community.”
