Work starts to improve multi-use games area at Withdean
Work has started today (Monday 9 June) to refurbish the multi-use games area (MUGA) at Withdean Sports Complex.
The work will see the old playing surface renovated and updated to modern standards, with improved safety and better accessibility.
Planning permission for the work was granted earlier this year.
The work, which will be carried out by ETC Sports Surfaces, will include:
- Renovation of the playable surface and improved drainage
- Upgraded fencing around the perimeter of the court to improve security
- Installation of new energy efficient LED floodlighting
- Improving court accessibility with a level access entrance
A space for the community to enjoy
Once completed, the updated facility will support a range of sports, including tennis, netball, basketball and pickleball, providing an enhanced and safer space for the community to enjoy.
The work is expected to be completed by the end of August.
Enhanced accessibility
Councillor Alan Robins, Cabinet member for Sports, Recreation and Libraries, said: “The multi-use games area at Withdean Sports Complex is now at the end of its life and urgently needs updating to continue to meet the needs of residents, community groups and sports clubs.
“We are delighted that the refurbishment project will not only provide a new and improved playing surface, but also enhance safety, save energy and provide better accessibility for all.”
Investment helping residents get active
The improvements are part of the council’s commitment to improve sports facilities in the city and provide opportunities for residents to get active, set out in the Sports Facilities Investment Plan.
Other current projects include exciting plans for a new community swimming pool at Withdean Sports Complex, which were recently unveiled.
Residents are currently being invited to help shape the proposals by taking part in an online Your Voice survey.
