4 people told to pay more than £8000 in connection with Blue Badge fraud offences
We’re today welcoming successful prosecutions against 4 people connected to Blue Badge fraud offences.
The prosecutions relate to the altering, misusing or using counterfeit Blue Badges in Brighton & Hove.
One person was ordered to pay more than £4300 connected to the displaying of an altered badge on four separate occasions. In total, they were all ordered to pay more than £8000 in fines and costs.
The convictions come on the heels of a campaign launched last month, raising awareness of the importance of Blue Badge spaces to those who need them, and the negative impact misusing them can have.
Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for Transport and City Infrastructure, said: “Blue Badges and disabled parking spaces are essential for people who rely on them to go about their daily lives with dignity and independence. When these are misused, it can have a real impact on those who genuinely need that support.
“This is why I welcome the action being taken against Blue Badge fraud in our city and these successful prosecutions against those who are committing Blue Badge fraud sends a clear message.
“By committing these offences, people are not only breaking the law but denying genuine Blue Badge holders the access they need.
“I’d remind everyone that Blue Badges should only be used by those eligible to have one and that we will look to take action towards anyone who uses one fraudulently, including prosecution.”
