Mayor opens extended and refurbished gym at Portslade Sports Centre
The new look gym at Portslade Sports Centre has been officially opened by Mayor Amanda Grimshaw.
The ambitious project has seen the popular gym almost double in size, with upgraded flooring, improved audio, visual and sound systems and a wide range of new equipment. Toilet facilities have also been expanded and improved.
Funded with section 106 money, along with investment from Freedom Leisure, which manages the centre on behalf of the council, the work has been carried out as part of the council’s Sports Facilities Investment Plan.
The plan aims to improve sports facilities in the city and provide a range of opportunities for residents to get active.
The new gym opened in late December, ready for residents to embark on a new health and fitness journey in the New Year.
Exciting new facility
Cutting the ribbon to open the refurbished gym, Cllr Grimshaw said: “This exciting new facility has almost doubled the size of the previous gym, offering people from the local community the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of new equipment, become healthier and tackle those New Year’s resolutions!
“The gym has been designed to cater for a wide range of ages and abilities, including students from Portslade Aldridge Community Academy. It was great to meet some of them at the opening ceremony.
“I’d like to thank our sports facilities team, Freedom Leisure, the Bailey Partnership and Shellmar Construction for all their hard work and dedication in making this amazing development possible.
“It’s another step forward in our commitment to improve sports facilities in the city and provide opportunities for residents to get active.”
Partnership working
Jason Musk, Freedom Leisure’s Area Manager, added: “We’re delighted with the new and improved facilities at Portslade Sports Centre.
“This refurbishment is a great example of strong partnership working and we look forward to welcoming residents from Portslade and Hove to one of the region’s leading fitness venues.”
