Reaching for the courage within us this Refugee Week
Monday 15 June marks the start of this year’s Refugee Week, a worldwide celebration of the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary, centred around World Refugee Day on 20 June.
An exciting week of events is planned by our libraries and partners across the city to celebrate and explore this year’s theme of ‘Courage’.
For refugees around the world, courage is a daily necessity to face unknown journeys, learn new languages and navigate unfamiliar systems.
At a time when the world feels divided and uncertain, Refugee Week gives us an opportunity to come together and share the courage to create a culture of welcome, to stand for what we believe in, and to celebrate the city’s communities.
This year’s celebrations are made even more special, as we’ll be marking it for the first time as an accredited Council of Sanctuary.
When a new place becomes a home
Nemat is a refugee from Afghanistan, who found his home in Brighton & Hove. He shared: "In this city I’ve felt doors open to me, from neighbours who welcomed me to the opportunity to work with the council, which has changed my life as a refugee.
“Brighton has shown me that a new place can become a home when people choose to see you, support you, and believe in what you can offer. I am simply grateful to be part of this community."
A city of courage
Councillor Mitchie Alexander, Cabinet member for Communities, Equalities, Public Health and Adult Social Care, said: “276 thousand lives, with different cultures, hobbies, careers, family situations, with different burdens and joys, all connected in one belief – that everyone should be equal, feel included and free to live the life they desire, in safety and with dignity. This is Brighton & Hove.
“Some of us were lucky enough to be born here, some of us had to face strenuous journeys to get here, and these are the residents we’re celebrating during Refugee Week, a worldwide festival honouring the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary.
“This year the spotlight is on courage. The courage shown when you uproot your life and face uncertainty with the aim of a better and safer future for you and your family. It’s also about having the courage to step up for what is right and fair, the courage to educate yourself, the courage to broaden your horizons. The courage to recognise and welcome inclusion.
“There is plentiful courage going around in Brighton & Hove, and we’re extremely proud to be celebrating Refugee Week for the first time as a Council of Sanctuary.
“Over the last 10 years, we were able to offer a safe home to people fleeing Syria, fleeing the long Russian invasion in Ukraine, fleeing rapidly worsening human rights in Afghanistan. We have also welcomed people from Hong Kong who are increasingly at risk from the Chinese authorities.
“Join us in celebrating the amazing achievements of newcomers in our city, and the fantastic work local organisations do to provide them a welcoming home, establish connections and build bridges.
“A week of exciting events has been planned across the city, don’t hesitate to get involved!”
Council of Sanctuary
Brighton & Hove City Council has recently been awarded ‘Council of Sanctuary’ status, recognising the organisation’s work in welcoming and supporting residents who are seeking sanctuary.
To achieve the accreditation, we submitted a 3-year action plan, committing to continue creating a culture of welcome and provide grant funding for the rich tapestry of local charities and groups who tirelessly support newcomers in our city.
This award builds on and expands the amazing work our libraries have been doing with Jubilee Library becoming the second library in the country to be awarded Library of Sanctuary status in 2019 and the whole of the service accredited as a Library Service of Sanctuary in 2024.
