Middle Street Primary School
Middle Street Primary School appointed an Interim Executive Board in June 2025 to address governance and financial challenges at the school.
Despite considerable effort over the last 7 months, after careful consideration the board has concluded that the school does not have a viable future due to the challenges it faces and has therefore recommended that it should close on Monday 31 August.
Middle Street Primary School currently has less than 135 pupils on roll. Analysis shows that there is sufficient capacity across the city's schools to accommodate all pupils from Middle Street Primary School.
The school will remain open for the remainder of the current academic year and will continue to provide high quality education to all pupils. If the closure is agreed, a transition process will be set up to assist pupils and families in moving to new schools.

Councillor Jacob Taylor, Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “We know that this has been a difficult decision for Middle Street Primary School’s Interim Executive Board to make, and one that they do not take lightly.
“The school has worked tirelessly to explore every possible option for the school's future. I’d like to thank the board, interim leadership team and all staff for their commitment to delivering high quality education to Middle Street Primary School’s pupils.
“We respect the board's recommendation to consult on the proposed closure and appreciate their professionalism in navigating these challenges. The council has been working closely with the board, and officers will continue to provide support to the school over the course of the consultation.
“We understand this will be upsetting news for parents, children, teachers and school staff. Our priority throughout this process will be ensuring the best outcomes for pupils and supporting families and staff during what we know will be a very challenging time.
“We want to reassure you that no decision has been made on these proposals yet and we encourage you to share your feedback through the online survey or at one of the consultation events.”
