Three new School Streets proposed – give us your views
People are being given the chance to give us their feedback on our plans to make roads near 3 Brighton & Hove schools safer for the city’s children.
We’ve launched consultations for new School Streets schemes at Woodingdean Primary, West Blatchington Primary (including King’s School) and Balfour Primary (including Varndean and Dorothy Stringer schools).
By restricting vehicle access during drop off and pick up times, the new School Streets will create a safer space for children and families during the school run and encourage them to walk, scoot or cycle more.
We’re now asking for the views of those parents and carers, the school community and residents living nearby.
The consultation is open until Tuesday 21 July.
We’ll also be holding a drop-in session where you can ask questions and find out more details. Details can be found on the consultation pages.
More about our School Streets
We currently have 15 School Streets in Brighton & Hove enforced with the help of school staff, volunteers or infrastructure such as manned gates or bollards.
At the end of 2025, we were granted new powers by the Department for Transport to enforce School Streets using CCTV cameras, meaning we can free up teachers and volunteers, which we know is being welcomed by the school communities.
We’ll be piloting these powers in September at Queen’s Park, Hangleton and West Hove / Hove Junior Primary Schools.
The following vehicles are exempt from the restrictions but will need to be added to an exemption list
- driving a vehicle registered to an address within the restricted area (including those of businesses and residents)
- a Blue Badge Holder who needs to access a property within the street
- a Professional Carer or a Carer for vulnerable residents who live on the street
- an emergency services vehicle on an emergency call
- a utility provider on an emergency call
- an employee, or working with, a business or service operating within the street
- driving a contracted school transport vehicle
Those wishing to apply for an exemption will be able to do so via the council website.
