The Whitehawk Link - £1 bus journeys from 1 July
A new bus fare will launch on Wednesday 1 July for people living and working in the Whitehawk area of the city.
The Whitehawk Link will allow people to take a single journey on the 1 and 21 services within the Whitehawk zone for just £1.
The 3-month trial offer is one of our new fare offers, being funded thanks to our Local Authority Bus Grant, which is spending £1.4 million in 2026/27 to make fares more affordable and help families in Brighton & Hove connect with shops, education, work and their communities.
£1 journeys can be accessed using tap on/tap off, mobile or cash on board. More information about fares can be found on the Brighton & Hove Buses website.
Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for Transport and City Infrastructure, said: “This new £1 Whitehawk Link is a really positive step, making it easier and more affordable for people to get to work, GP and hospital appointments, access shops and services and stay connected. We know even short journeys can add up, so this will make a real difference to local families.
“The new offer is part of our wider programme to keep bus travel accessible and affordable across Brighton & Hove. From free travel for care leavers and children, to fair pricing for those paying in person, we’re working to ensure cost isn’t a barrier to getting around.
“Thanks to our Local Authority Bus Grant, we’re investing in affordable transport and better connections, creating opportunity and demonstrating how we can respond to local needs.”
Supporting travel across the city
We’re spending around £1.4 million in 2026/27 on making bus fares more affordable thanks to funding from the Department for Transport’s Local Authority Bus Grant.
- From September a 3-month pilot will be launching giving care leavers aged between 18 to 24 FREE bus travel in the city – this will benefit more than 200 young people.
- Up to 4 children under the age of 19 continue to travel for FREE with a fare paying adult – that’s around 1 million free journeys this year.
- We’re continuing to support the Breeze Up to the Downs services, linking people with the South Downs.
- In‑person Travel Shop citySAVER tickets continue to match online prices, so that digital exclusion does not prevent anyone from accessing bus travel at a fair cost.
These offers are in addition to the more than £10 million we’ll be spending again on providing free travel for people with Older and Disabled Person’s Bus Passes, funded by surplus from council fees and charges.
