Description
Built 1939 for well-known Brighton brewery Tamplins, and therefore probably by their architect Arthur Packham. (The date appears on the hopper on the external rear wall). Tamplins were in a period of expansion at this time – associated with the popularity of Brighton as a seaside resort in the early 20th century, and its continued suburban growth. Other pubs designed for Tamplins include St Aubyn’s Hotel, The Brunswick and Grand Central. Two storeys plus attic. Clearly 1930s in style, but with references to the English Renaissance. Brick, with unusual plan comprising two matching elevations articulated by a canted corner. The plan form responds well to its corner location. Main entrance originally on corner, with large, prominent chimney stack above which forms the main focus of the composition. Decorative urns to the shoulders of the chimney. Four centred arches to openings on ground floor, square and tapered windows above. Hipped dormers set within a steep tiled roof. Two further chimney stacks terminating the roof to either end of the building. The pub is reported to have opened on 3 September 1939, the day Britain declared war on Germany.
