The Council is the data controller for purposes of the Data Protection Act (1998) and EU General Data Protection Regulation as of May 2018 and is registered as a data controller with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) under registration number Z5840053.
Brighton and Hove City Council are committed to protecting your personal information. As a data controller we have a responsibility to make sure you know why and how your personal information is being collected in accordance with relevant data protection law.
Why we are processing your data
We are conducting the Safe and Well at School Survey (SAWSS) in order to gather information on the health and wellbeing of children and young people in the city. The results can be used by schools to validate, inform and develop school’s work around health and wellbeing, especially the PSHE and Citizenship curriculum and health and wellbeing improvements. The commitment of schools to this survey enables the local authority and its partners to get a thorough overview of the situation across the city and informs the commissioning and evaluation of services and support for schools and children, young people and their families.
We have a legal basis for collecting this data as it is considered necessary to perform a task carried out in the public interest.
We are also collecting special category data under the legal basis that it is necessary for statistic reporting or research purposes.
Access to individual school data at local authority level is restricted to the Public Health Schools Programme, the Public Health Intelligence team and the Education, Standards & Achievement team who will use the data for the purposes described above. Pseudonymised data (not including school name) will be shared with researchers from the Department of Psychology at the University of Sussex who work collaboratively with Brighton & Hove City Council, to conduct further analysis of the data that will assist the council in refining commissioning of services targeted toward young people.
The data will be held for 10 years, at which point the name of the school will be deleted from the records, rendering the data anonymous.
