About Bright on Boilers
Bruce, a heating engineer with over 16 years’ experience and owner of Bright on Boilers, was one of the first recipients of a cargo bike, funded by our Carbon Neutral Fund as part of the eCargo Bike Accelerator Project. He’s had his Larry vs Harry EP8 Bullitt electric cargo bike for just over a year now and has travelled 867 km for local jobs in the city. He uses his cargo bike for local jobs in the city and only uses his van when he needs to.
Bruce’s motive for wanting a cargo bike was to reduce his business’s environmental impact. Simultaneously he saves time and parking costs. By using an electric cargo bike in Brighton & Hove, Bruce does not contribute to air pollution or congestion in the city. He feels much more connected to the community and customers really like the fact he is help them and contributing to the city in a positive way.

“I really like it when I pull up to a customer’s door. They think the cargo bikes a great idea. They take photos and chat with me about it. Other traders also talk with me too, particularly multi-trade guys. I’ve even had scaffolders ask about it. I find riding the cargo bike is fun and doesn’t feel like I’m going to work.”
“I use my cargo bike for specific jobs such as small maintenance jobs and servicing around town. The container is big enough to hold my large service bag plus some tools, then I’m off. Having two batteries extends my range and I can easily swap over during the day, which is really handy.”
Outcome
Due to Brighton & Hove City Council’s ecargo bike project, Bruce is saving on time and money, particularly when it comes to visiting local customers in central town where parking can be a problem.
“Using the cargo bike enables me to be more efficient and organised. I use it as a tool when I need too, and only use my van when I need too. Essentially, it’s about using the right vehicle for the right job.”
- Having the cargo bikes enables flexibility for local jobs
- Parking is free and easy
- Traveling to appointments is stress free
- Approx 250kg of CO2e saved to date
Switching to cargo bikes reduces the environmental and social impact of deliveries and services in our cities. This contributes towards Brighton & Hove City Council’s Carbon Neutral 2030 goal.
