How Frank uses eCargo bikes
Frank, a painter-decorator, has been using an Urban Arrow XL electric cargo bike since September 2023.
Since he collected it, he’s cycled over 3,800km. He uses his cargo bike for all his local work and says it’s completely replaced his van. He’s used the cargo bike to cycle as far as Worthing for work.
Since using it Frank says it has changed his life and how he works. He reports being more organised and more aware of the many benefits it brings for his line of work as a decorator, in particular for his health and wellbeing.
Frank now saves on parking costs, travel time and finds using the cargo bike is less stressful than driving. One of the main advantages of using it is that it enables him to gain access to parts of town, like the North Laines, where he couldn’t have previously gone using his van. Using the cargo bike enables him to gain access to narrow, pedestrianised streets.
Because of this advantage he has gained more business and is busier than ever.
In addition to giving his business an edge, the cargo bike uses less space on the road and eliminates parking as an issue. If he has to go home for lunch or pick up extra supplies, he’s always able return to clients’ properties or premises and not worry about losing a parking space.

Action
Frank was supported and advised by the eCargo Bike Accelerator project and received a cargo bike specifically suited for his needs. Frank’s cargo bike has a side opening flight box which enables easy storage of equipment.
“Using the cargo bike has change my life and has made me more organised than before. Since using it I’m less stressed, busier than before and enjoy my environment.”
Outcome
Due to Brighton & Hove City Council’s ecargo bike project, Frank saves on time and money as he doesn’t require a trader’s permit, saves on fuel and parking costs. When it comes to visiting local customers in central town and the wider area, they love the fact he turns up on a cargo bike.
“Using the cargo bike means I’m more in control of my time and traveling is less stressful. Using it enables me to take different routes and I enjoy my environment more. I also have a bit of an obsession with colours of doors. If I see a colour I really like I can stop and take a photo. In a van I couldn’t do that.”
Using eCargo bikes:
- saves on time
- parking is free and easy
- is more efficient and organised
- over 1.1 tonnes of CO2e saved to date
Switching to cargo bikes reduces the environmental and social impact of deliveries and services in our city. This contributes towards Brighton & Hove City Council’s Carbon Neutral 2030 goal.
