Case study: Hove Village Day Nursery

  2. Case study: Hove Village Day Nursery

Hove Village Day Nursery is a growing group of four nurseries in Brighton & Hove, with the most recent site at the Sea Lanes development opening in 2023.

The nurseries offer childcare from 12 weeks to 5 years old, with a focus on creativity in education, and provide home-cooked meals for their children. These are prepared daily at one of the nurseries, requiring regular transportation to the other sites.

To deliver these meals they use a cargo bike courier.

Former operations

Hove Village previously used a taxi company for this, but had issues with punctuality and traffic. They were also keen to reduce their carbon footprint.

“When we used the taxi service, we had to send a member of staff in the taxi with the food for security. That used loads of staff time.”

Action taken

Hove Village Nurseries started using Zedify for their food deliveries. Zedify is a cargo bike logistics company based in Brighton with a range of different vehicles. They were able to meet Hove Village Nursery’s need for daily time-sensitive deliveries.

“We’re trying to reduce our environmental impact – we take the bus between sites, we’ve increased the amount we recycle, and the kids get involved with litter picks in the park. Using cargo bikes was an ideal next step.”

Outcome

Hove Village Nursery has been using Zedify since September. They send two runs of prepared meals every day by cargo bike – equating to 186 monthly vehicle miles switched to cargo bike. Annually, this equates to a saving of 586kg of CO2.

Hove Village Day Nursery are now looking at new ways of bringing cargo bikes into their operations.

“Zedify have been brilliant. They’re efficient, friendly, and always on time. It’s a really good service!”

Switching to cargo bikes reduces the environmental and social impact of deliveries in our cities. This contributes towards Brighton & Hove City Council’s Carbon Neutral 2030 goal.
