Choosing safely
Guidance on choosing the right childcare provider for you and your child.
Things to consider when choosing childcare
It is important to think carefully when choosing childcare. When you find a provider you would like to use, take some time to find out more about them. It is your responsibility to make sure that the service is safe for you and your family to use.
Good childcare providers will give you clear information and welcome your questions.
Some examples of questions to ask and things to think about, include:
- whether the provider is registered with Ofsted
- staff and volunteer DBS checks - all staff working with, or having access to children, young people or vulnerable adults should be DBS checked
- appropriate training, support and supervision for staff and volunteers
- whether the provider belongs to a professional organisation or quality assurance scheme
- if they have policies in place for:
- Child Protection
- Health and Safety
- a complaints process
- their commitment to including everyone and equal opportunities
- visiting the provider’s setting before you decide to use it and arranging a trial session for your child
- speaking to other people using the provider or ask for references
When your child is attending your chosen childcare provider
When your children are attending, ask them questions about their activities and listen to them carefully if they have any worries.
Make sure to trust your instincts. If you do not feel comfortable about the provider, do not use them.
The NSPCC website has more information about keeping your child safe.
Concerns about a childcare provider
If you have any concerns about a childcare provider:
- Speak to the manager of the setting.
- Raise your concerns with the head office (if your childcare setting has one) or a professional organisation.
- If the provider is registered with Ofsted, contact them. Find contact details on Ofsted's website.
- If you feel that a child or children are at risk of harm, contact the Front Door For Families.
