How to buy your council home
Find out who has the Right to Buy their council property, how the process works and how to apply.
Who can buy their council home
Buying the council home you rent is also called Right to Buy. You may have the Right to Buy if you:
- are a secure tenant of the council
- have spent at least 3 years as a public sector tenant
You may be able to exercise the Right to Buy jointly with:
- a partner
- members of your family who have lived with you for the past 12 months
- someone who is a joint tenant with you
What circumstances would stop you having the Right to Buy
You cannot buy your home if:
- you live in sheltered housing - this type of housing is excluded from the scheme
- a court makes a possession order that says you must leave your home
- you are an undischarged bankrupt
- you work for the council and your home is part of your conditions of service
Your Right to Buy can be suspended or terminated if you, someone in your household, or a visitor engages in anti-social behaviour.
