About our Net Zero team
We are creating a new Net Zero team to help drive forward the council’s carbon reduction, climate adaptation and biodiversity ambitions at pace.
In 2018 the council declared a climate and biodiversity emergency and committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. In Autumn 2020, the council held Climate Assemblies on the topic of travel and transport, and climate action work across the council was brought together under a single 2030 Carbon Neutral Programme.
A Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment conducted in 2023 identified the city’s specific vulnerabilities to climate change impacts and recommended further strategic adaptation work to build Brighton & Hove’s resilience to these impacts. A decarbonisation study is also underway to guide our actions to reduce the city’s carbon footprint.
As lead for the Living Coast Partnership, we recently applied to renew our unique Biosphere designation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). This is an important status for the region and the city, key for protecting the natural environment and influencing the sustainable and diverse management of 390km2 of coastline by working with more than 40 partners from across the multiple sectors.
To achieve success, a range of transformational projects will need to be delivered across multiple sectors, including:
- transport
- open spaces
- energy
- housing and property
This will include delivery of key infrastructure projects, innovative nature-based solutions, policy and strategy development, strategic partnership working, and culture change across the organisation and the city.
