We’re launching the latest phase of our Keep Brighton & Hove Tidy campaign by cleaning some of the main streets across the city.
A team of Cityclean staff will use high pressure hoses to jet wash bins, street furniture, lamp posts and pavements, and paint out ugly graffiti tags on council owned property in five city locations.
The four day clean up, from Tuesday 1 to Friday 4 June, is the latest in our series of city deep cleans, and also ties in with this year’s national Keep Britain Tidy event which is running from Friday 28 May to Sunday 13 June.
Last September and more recently, we’ve carried out deep cleans in the city centre, mainly around Queen’s Road, the Laines, North Street and Western Road.
To prepare for the warm weather over the bank holiday weekend, in the last few days the council has also placed extra bins on our seafront on top of the 70 additional bins put there earlier this year, with more bin collections.
Seafront railings and seafront shelters have been painted and teams have also been out clearing masses of litter from the busy A27.
Targeting areas outside the city centre
This time, we’re starting off in the Laines before moving to Hove and Portslade, with the work starting at 9pm until 5am. The schedule is:
- 1 June - Kensington Gardens/Gloucester Road
- 1 June – Hove Town Hall (seating area on Church Road)
- 2 June – George Street, Hove
- 3 June - Goldstone Villas/Hove Station
- 4 June – Boundary Road, Portslade
This work will be on top of our daily recycling and refuse collections which will continue as normal.
We'd like everyone to get involved
Our Tidy Up Team has also organised a series of events over the week, starting on Bank Holiday Monday and ending on Sunday 6 June. These are events everyone can get involved in:
- Adopt-a-Street – you can volunteer to look after a street. It’s a brilliant way of keeping your neighbourhood clean
- A Tin of Black Paint and a Brush – council staff and volunteers will paint out graffiti on communal bins
- Dust Up Your Doorstep – we’re asking volunteers to look at cleaning up outside where they live by picking litter, removing weeds, jet washing pavements if possible, and anything else to make the area outside their home clean
- The Lewes Road Big Tidy Up – come along and help clean up this very busy road by removing stickers, collecting litter, painting out graffiti and removing weeds
The tidy up week ends with Brighton & Hove Mayor Councillor Alan Robins’ Big Tidy Up on the beach.
For more information and to get involved in any of these events please email communitycleanup@brighton-hove.gov.uk.
‘Concentrating on key areas’
Council leader Phélim Mac Cafferty said: “We’re really delighted to once again be taking to the city’s streets, continuing our work to Keep Brighton & Hove Tidy, as part of the national Keep Britain Tidy campaign.
"This year we’ll be concentrating our efforts on key areas of Hove plus Portslade’s main shopping road.
“In the last few days, the council has placed extra bins on our seafront, with more bin collections. Seafront railings and seafront shelters have been painted and teams have been out clearing masses of litter from the busy A27.
“I’m hoping traders and residents will get involved. Together, let’s take pride in our city as we recover from the pandemic.”
‘Keeping the city clean is everyone’s responsibility’
Councillor Mac Cafferty added: “Keeping Brighton & Hove Tidy is everyone’s responsibility, and this can be anyone, including residents, businesses, volunteers, council staff, councillors, tidy up teams, beach cleaners and students.”
“I, and other councillors and staff, will be out during the week carrying out tidy ups in the city and getting involved in different events. I would encourage residents and businesses to get involved how they can.”
Cllr Mac Cafferty has written to businesses again this year setting out the council’s plans and asking for support where possible. This could be by cleaning outside their premises, removing graffiti from their building or cleaning their trade bin.
‘City has great future ahead’
He added: “I firmly believe our city has a great future ahead and we will bounce back from the pandemic even stronger and in better shape than before.
“Cleaning up our city is an essential part of safe reopening.”
Anyone who carries out a tidy up, or contributes in any way, is being encouraged to post information on our Twitter and Facebook accounts, or at #KeepBHTidy and #GBSpringClean, with images and telling us how you got involved. We’ll retweet and repost with a huge thank you.
