Save money and save the planet at free family food event on Saturday 9 July

Learn how to save money on food bills as well as protecting the environment at this free event at The Old Boat Corner Community Centre, Hollingbury, BN1 8GN on Saturday 9 July from 11am to 5pm.

Everyone, of any age, is welcome.

Reduce waste, save money and protect your environment

By cutting food waste, we can make the food budget go further – and reduce our impact on the environment too. We are looking forward to joining a range of other circular economy organisations from across the city to explore ways to do this.

Meet the people who can help​

Come along to meet local growers, organisations who help people get more affordable food and representatives from the Surplus Food Network, who redistribute excess food from farms, growers and local businesses to where it is most needed.

Lots of things to see and do​

There will be children's activities, food to taste, talks by food experts, live demonstrations and give-and-take tables. A free lunch will be served from 12 noon (first come first served).

Councillor Amy Heley, co-chair of the Environment, Transport & Sustainability committee said:

“It’s wonderful to see so many organisations from across the city coming together in the fight against food waste. An astonishing 6,000 people in the city are supported every week, accessing food through community emergency food providers, so it is essential that we ensure food is not thrown away.​

“Sixty per cent of food waste happens in people’s homes, and this event will help residents to make the small changes in their own behaviour that will add up to much greater change and help Brighton & Hove to become a truly circular city.”

This event follows on from a two-day event aimed at keeping textiles in use for longer, held at Whitehawk Library and Community Hub in April this year.

Circular Economy principles

Circular Economy principles are a based on a move away from a linear ‘take, make, consume and throw-away society’ towards one that minimises waste and pollution, keeps products and materials in use for as long as possible and supports the regeneration and protection of natural resources. See the circular economy routemap for more information.
