Councillors to decide next steps for Brighton Marina's Neighbourhood Plan
Following the independent examination of the Brighton Marina Neighbourhood Plan, councillors at a full council meeting on 24 October will be asked to approve the examiner’s recommendation that the plan should now proceed to two referendums.
As the Neighbourhood Area is designated as a Business Area, the amended plan would then go to two local referendums asking whether it should be adopted by the council, one vote for residents and one for local businesses.
Neighbourhood Plans sit alongside other local planning policies, such as the City Plan, to guide development and to help decide the outcome of planning applications in the area. There are currently two areas in the city with ‘Made’ Neighbourhood Plans that have been examined, been through a referendum and have been adopted by the council - Hove Station Area and Rottingdean Parish.
Brighton Marina Neighbourhood Forum submitted their draft plan to the council in November 2023. A 6-week public consultation took place in February and March 2024, after which the draft plan was examined by an independent examiner. The examiner’s report concluded that the plan, subject to several modifications, met the standard required and could proceed to the referendums.
If the plan is supported by more than 50% of those voting in both referendums the council will formally adopt the Brighton Marina Neighbourhood Plan at its next meeting.
