Brighton & Hove backs National Child Safety Week with support for families
We are supporting Child Safety Week 2025 (3 to 9 June), a national campaign from the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT), to help families prevent serious accidents and keep children safe.
This year’s theme – Safety is for sharing – highlights the power of sharing simple safety knowledge between friends, family, professionals and communities to help protect children from avoidable injuries.
Unintentional injuries are one of the leading causes of hospital admissions and long-term disability in children. In 2023/24, Accident and Emergency (AE) attendances for unintentional and deliberate injuries for children aged 0-4 years in Brighton & Hove were below the rate for East Sussex and above the rate for West Sussex according to the Public health Fingertips data.
Helpful guidance and tips
This year, CAPT’s Child Safety 2025 information pack has helpful guidance on injuries that we see most often at A&E and includes key risks around the home. While the parents pack has information and tips on preventing common injuries, including burns, choking and safety around dogs.
We work closely with health visitors and Family Hubs to offer free home safety equipment to eligible families. This includes safety gates, cupboard locks, corner cushions and blind cord cleats – all small changes that make a big difference.
All referrals to this service must be in the Brighton & Hove area as we are unable to make assessments or install safety equipment outside of the city.
A safe start in life
Councillor Mitchie Alexander, Cabinet Member for Communities, Equalities, Public Health and Adult Social Care, said: “Every child deserves a safe start in life, and small everyday actions – like sharing safety tips or fitting a stair gate – can help prevent tragedy. Supporting parents with practical help and trusted advice is one of the most important things we do. I’m proud of the council’s home safety work and the difference it makes to local families.”
As part of Child Safety Week, Family Hubs, health visitors and community groups across the city will be sharing helpful safety tips with families. Families, carers and professionals can find free downloadable fact sheets, videos and safety checklists on the CAPT website.
More information about home safety, which provides page translation and screen reader tools, is available on our health visiting provider Health for Under 5s webpages.
