Could you become a Shared Lives carer in 2025?
Come and speak to the Shared Lives team at Jubilee Library to find out how you could be paid to provide accommodation, care and support in your home.
Our Shared Lives scheme supports adults and young people over the age of 16 in Brighton & Hove who are unable to live independently.
Visit our drop-in session on Thursday 23 January, from 10am to 4pm at Jubilee Library, to learn more about becoming a Shared Lives carer. You can meet the Shared Lives team, ask any questions and find out whether it would be a good fit for you.
Shared Lives
Shared Lives carers can support people with learning disabilities and some physical disabilities, mental health and sensory needs, as well as older people with support needs and young people leaving care, to lead happy fulfilling lives.
The scheme matches the person with a Shared Lives carer, who provides accommodation, care and support in their home. Shared Lives carers can give support either full-time, or for short breaks or day activities.
Shared Lives carers are self-employed. Full-time Shared Lives carers are paid a fee of around £400 per week, depending on the needs of the person; there can be significant tax benefits. They also receive training and ongoing support from the Shared Lives scheme.
Lyn, one of our Shared Lives carers, said: “Shared Lives has been a good lifestyle choice for me as I enjoyed working with people with a learning disability. I would recommend Shared Lives to anyone who is a caring person who likes to have fun and see people grow.”

Crucial support
Councillor Tristram Burden, Cabinet member for Adult Social Care, Public Health and Service Transformation, said: "Our Shared Lives carers provide crucial support by helping people live in their communities, explore their hobbies and interests and lead happy and fulfilling lives.
“However, we know that there are many more people in Brighton & Hove who would benefit from a Shared Lives placement, so we are always looking for more carers to join the scheme.
"If you have the time and space to consider opening your home to someone who needs support, please reach out to the Shared Lives team to find out more about this rewarding opportunity."
