New look for the Level play area – have your say
The much-loved play area at the Level is being updated and residents are being asked for their thoughts on how it should look.
The council’s Cityparks team is proposing a modern open design, with clear site lines and open structures, to create a feeling of safety for visitors.
The play area will have its own unique identity, with long-lasting, sustainable equipment and improved accessibility.
Residents are being asked to take part in a consultation and comment on the proposals for the redesign.
Sand play will not be included in the new design. This decision has been made following concerns about how to ensure a safe, clean environment as well as the cost of maintenance.
The council accepts this may be disappointing, but removing the sand will allow us to focus on other improvements to the play area and improve accessibility for all users.
The plans do not include changes to the water play feature, café, toilets or trees, so are not part of the consultation.

Councillor Alan Robins, Cabinet member for Sports and Recreation, said: “The Level play area is one of the best loved and most popular in the city, but its constant use means it’s time for an upgrade.
“We want to ensure that the play area remains safe and welcoming as well as meeting the needs of our residents, so we need their help to shape the designs.
“I would urge people to take part in the consultation so we can create something really special for those who love the Level.”
The consultation runs until 30 June.
