‘Hop on, venture out’ to explore the city’s green spaces by bus
Residents are being encouraged to ‘hop on, venture out’ and explore more of Brighton & Hove’s green spaces, nature trails and walking routes as part of a new campaign.
We want to make it easier for people without access to a car or those looking to swap a car journey for the bus to discover some of the city’s most loved outdoor destinations, helping more residents enjoy the benefits of walking in nature while reducing congestion and improving air quality.
From the South Downs to local parks and coastal walks, ‘Hop on, venture out’ highlights the wide range of bus services that easily connect people with the start of a nature walk.
Read more on our hop on, venture out webpage where you will find:
- a clear map showing all 18 walking routes, the bus service(s) and the nearest bus stop
- detailed information for each walk, including directions, distance and terrain
- a downloadable map for each walk so you can take it with you on the go
- a link to a free walking app if you prefer using your smartphone to navigate
Making it easier to get outdoors
The campaign showcases a variety of popular and lesser-known walking routes, trails and green spaces that can be easily reached by bus.
They include:
- Scenic countryside walks in the South Downs National Park
- Family-friendly walks
- Coastal and seafront routes
- Accessible walking and wheeling routes for all abilities
Information is available online to help residents plan their journeys, including which bus routes to take, details about each walk and printable maps. A free walking app is also available to help with navigating the walks, which range from an easy 20-minute stroll to a more challenging 2.5 hour hike.
By encouraging people to ‘hop on’ a bus and ‘venture out’ into nature, the campaign supports our efforts to enable residents to look after their mental and physical health and enjoy an active lifestyle in the many accessible places of nature the city offers.
Encouraging healthier, sustainable travel
Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for Transport and City Infrastructure, said: “We’re incredibly lucky to have such a wide range of beautiful green spaces and walking routes right on our doorstep in Brighton & Hove.
“This campaign is all about showing just how easy it is to reach them by bus. Whether it’s a short trip to a local park or a day out in the South Downs, public transport offers a convenient, affordable and sustainable way to get there.
“By choosing to hop on the bus and venture out, everyone can enjoy the benefits of spending time outdoors while helping us reduce traffic and improve air quality across the city.”
Supporting sustainable travel in the city
The campaign builds on ongoing work to encourage bus use and make sustainable travel more accessible for residents and visitors.
As well as helping people connect with nature, it aims to:
- Reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions
- Support healthier, more active lifestyles
- Improve access to green spaces for all communities
- Make better use of the city’s public transport network
