New plan brings together achievements and over 100 actions to shape a sustainable future
A new Climate & Nature Action Plan details the council’s programme on low carbon energy and energy efficiency, nature restoration and climate adaptation.
The Plan sets out 133 practical actions from developing a pipeline of investible energy decarbonisation projects, to tackling flooding, heatwaves and pollution through capacity-building in communities, and ambitious projects to improve biodiversity.
It also brings together achievements over the past year.
These include:
- The best EV charging coverage outside of London and a growing electric bus fleet operating on key routes.
- 89% of our council homes now have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of C or above
- Expanded recycling collections to include new materials and the first weekly food waste collections.
- Being part of the government’s Pathfinder programme to develop the UK’s first national Circular Economy Strategy.
- Restoring nature in the city and beyond through partnership with The Living Coast UNESCO Biosphere, the UK’s only urban biosphere reserve
- Supporting farming to restore habitats and soil, through management of more than 5,000 hectares on the City Downland Estate.
Councillor Tim Rowkins, Cabinet member for Net Zero and Environmental Services, said: “Our Climate and Nature Action Plan is at the heart of building a better Brighton & Hove.
“As a council we have a strong track record of climate leadership working with partners throughout the city.
“We’ve been accelerating our efforts at scale and pace to address the environmental impacts we’re now seeing all around us.
“Whether you’re a resident, business owner, community group, or partner organisation, this plan shows where we’re heading, why it matters, and how you can be part of the journey.”
Last year the CDP awarded Brighton & Hove A-rated city status for the third year running, and Climate Emergency UK put Brighton & Hove among the top 30 councils for climate action.
