Work begins to reshape the Palmeira flowerbeds
Work to reshape the flowerbeds at Palmeira Square (North) began this week.
The improvements mark the start of a soft landscaping project - a collaboration between the council and members of the Palmeira Square Partnership working group.
The project aims to refresh the garden’s planting areas, creating a more attractive and sustainable space for residents and visitors. The work is expected to take several weeks.
The new design has been shaped by more than 1,100 responses to a public consultation and will be maintained with support from local community groups.
Work began in October to re-design the pathways and improve accessibility. Railings were also removed which will open up views and connections.
First phase of works
The initial stage will focus on preparing the site for planting in spring and will include changing the layout of the beds.
The planting scheme will be carried out in partnership with members of the Friends of Adelaide and Palmeira Square (FOPA), ensuring the community plays an active role in shaping the space.
The fencing around the square will remain in place for the duration of the work.
Sustainability and heritage
The new planting scheme will prioritise pollinator-friendly species, drought-tolerant plants and ground-cover varieties to support biodiversity and adapt to a changing climate.
The design also celebrates the original pre-1953 layout of the garden, restoring elements that reflect its historic character while introducing modern, sustainable planting.
The Floral Clock feature will remain untouched as part of this phase of work.
Floral Clock consultation
In autumn 2025, we carried out a consultation on the future of the Floral Clock feature, which has not been working for many years.
No decision has yet been made, and council officers are continuing to work with members of the Palmeira Square Working Group to develop fully costed, feasible options for the clock’s future.
These options will be open to public consultation before a final decision is made. Feedback from the previous consultation is guiding this process to ensure proposals reflect community views.
Enhancing green spaces
Councillor Alan Robins, Cabinet Member for Sport, Recreation and Libraries, said: “We’re delighted to be kicking off the new year with work starting on the next stage of improvements at Palmeira Square.
“This project reflects our commitment to maintaining and enhancing green spaces for the community while increasing biodiversity and adapting to climate change.”
