Cemetery fees for residents and non-residents of Brighton & Hove

Brighton & Hove City Council subsidises the ongoing maintenance of cemeteries. This is funded through payment of council tax, and residents are offered a reduction on the full cost of the service.

A resident is defined as:

any person who has, or at the time of death had, a permanent address within the boundary of Brighton & Hove City Council, or who had lived permanently within the city in the preceding 5 years
any person who at the time of death had a permanent address in the Parish of Peacehaven (subject to review)
in the case of a child, a parent who meets the above criteria
any person in the care of Brighton & Hove City Council, Adult Social Care

To qualify for resident status:

when purchasing grave rights, the purchaser needs to be a resident
when arranging a burial (including an ashes burial), the deceased needs to have been a resident

The fees listed are for residents and non-residents.

This applies to all purchases of grave rights, interment and ashes interment. Where a non-resident is to be buried, a non-resident fee will apply regardless of the status of the grave owner.

Note

The purchase of the grant of exclusive right of burial is for a period of 50 years.

The exclusive right of burial can be extended for an additional 25 years after the initial grant expires. The fee for this service will be one-half of the purchase fee at the time of renewal.

Should a coffin be larger than the requested grave space, an adjoining grave space may need to be purchased to accommodate the burial, and appropriate additional charges may be made.

Interment - this can only be arranged where the exclusive right of burial has been purchased

The interment fee includes:

excavating the grave
supplying timbers
supplying lowering webbing and grass matting
re-filling and mounding the grave and leaving tidy, with any floral tributes placed on the grave
topping up the grave during the first year
levelling and grass seeding after full settlement

Where 2 persons are interred in a single grave space at the same time, including cremated remains, the second interment fee will be reduced by 50%.

Hove Chapel is only available on weekdays (subject to availability).
