Tuition services for children unable to attend school due to a medical need
Find out about our teaching services for children who are in hospital or at home because of an illness or injury.
If your child can’t go to school
Your child's school will provide work they can do at home if they can't go to school because they're ill, sick or injured.
If your child is likely to be ill for a long period, our teaching services may be able to:
- link up with your child's school to make sure they follow the right coursework
- help with English, maths and science
- help prepare your child to go back to school
Home Tuition Service
Our Home Tuition Service is for children who are physically too ill to go to school, have a long-term mental health condition, are recovering from an operation, or are pregnant.
If your child needs to use this service, this will be arranged by the school, education welfare officers or medical services. They will do this by referring your child to our service.
Hospital Teaching Service
The Hospital Teaching Service provides education for children of school age while they are in hospital.
They’re based at the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
They focus on:
- developing literacy, numeracy and IT skills
- providing continuity in other subjects
- responding to individual pupil's needs
- stimulating and maintaining children's interest in learning
The service is available three hours a day during term time.
If your child needs to use this service, the hospital will arrange this. The teaching staff and hospital staff liaise closely regarding new admissions.
