Financial help for further education (FE) students
Find out what financial support FE students can get.
Help with the cost of child care
If you are between the ages of 16 and 18, help with the cost of child care whilst you are studying is available under a Government scheme called Care to Learn. Go to the Care to Learn pages on the GOV.UK website.
Residential support pilot scheme
If you go to a college that's too far away from your home for you to travel there daily, you may be able to get help with the cost of lodgings. Ask about this at your college.
Learner Support (Hardship) Funds
If you need special clothing or equipment for your course, or if you have to spend extra money (for example, for a field trip), you may be able to apply for help with the cost.
Help is normally limited to students from low income families.
Ask your school or college for details.

Travel discounts for FE students
Brighton & Hove FE students can get discounts on bus and rail travel. Some students may also qualify for help with travel costs from the council.
Discounts on bus fares for students
Brighton & Hove buses offer discounted fares for those studying or on apprenticeships.
Find out how to get a student discount on bus fares.
Discounts on rail travel - Sussex Student Card
If you're a full-time FE student aged 16 to 25 and your home address is in Brighton & Hove, East Sussex or West Sussex, you may be able to get one third off the cost of your daily travel by rail from home to school or college.
Find out how to get a discount on the Southern Railway website.
You can't combine this discount with any other discount schemes, for example you can't use this discount with the Unizone scheme.
How to get the discount
Firstly you need to have a Sussex Student Card. If you don't have one, pick up an application form from your school or college. If your school or college is outside Brighton & Hove, East Sussex or West Sussex send an email to your student support team to ask for a form.
You'll need to get the form countersigned by your school or college and then send the top copy to the address at the bottom of the form.
Once you have your Sussex Student Card, you can buy your discounted ticket on the Sussex further education season ticket website. You can only buy your ticket online and it will be sent to you by post.
When buying your ticket you may be asked questions about your travel. This will help us and the rail company gather information about student travel patterns and see how well the scheme is working.
